I strongly agree with this article. I was using GoDaddy shared hosting and was having lots of problems with SE ranking and email (my server was blacklisted by gmail and yahoo). Turns out, I had a few rouge 'server mates.' However, as soon as I moved to a VPS (dedicated ip) my website traffic increased 3x.

The jury still seems to be out on how shared hosting affects site rank, but the possibility of a spammer sharing your shared server is a real problem. I had this happen on my shared server, where I hosted multiple sites I had developed, and it shut down email service for a couple of weeks for several clients who rely on their sites for email. The host was quick to jump on the problem, but there is still time required for the blacklist removal to propagate through the net.

We need more posts like this!
There is a difference, plus you do not have to go out a get a dedicated server, you simply request a dedicated IP from your host provider.
Most sites I have that I want solid rankings for I definitely go for dedicated IPs

Strongly disagree. I have plenty of sites on shared hosting, that rank VERY well. The only time I need a dedicated IP is if one of the clients needs SSL: that's it. All my clients use Google Apps for email, which negates any spam or scamming issues from my IP.

Also, regarding online shopping - most smaller sites use a Yahoo store, or a Paypal shopping cart, or.... ? All these solutions are not hosted on your website, they shoot you off to the respective website to process the transaction.

Besides, how many people check to see if a site is a shared hosting site, or dedicated, before making a purchase ? You and me, maybe - everyone else, not likely.

You can't see much difference between pyrite and gold at first glance either. Just wait until someone on your shared IP launches a spam attack either intentionally or not, and your IP is blacklisted. And for confidence on SSL, if you were gonna give your credit card to myco.com wouldn't you wanna see a certificate that mentions myco.com by name, not some wildcard cert from the hosting co? Shared IPs on shared hosting is fine for a little brochureware site which is what a lot of sites are. Virtualization is the wave of the future. I have my own IP and unmanaged virtual for $15 a month. Can't beat the $1.75 that Cyberland charges for shared, but well..... it's NOT shared.

I cant say I have ever seen much difference between a dedicated server and a shared one. It wouldn't make much sense for Google to give priority to a dedicated server. Dedicated servers cost a lot more than shared so I am guessing that the majority of the sites on the net use a shared host.I am sure Google would/does reduce the effect of interlinking sites on the same IP/Class C but I would hope websites wouldn’t be penalized for it.
